What Parents Need to Know Before Entering Baby of the Year 2026 — A Complete Guide

Baby of the Year 2026 opens for public voting on August 31st. If you are considering entering your baby or have already entered and are trying to figure out what comes next you are in the right place.

I am not a neutral observer on this topic. I competed in Baby of the Year with my son Julian and reached the semifinals. Our campaign was featured on Boston 25 News. I know exactly what it feels like to enter this competition without a complete picture of how it works and I know exactly what the information gap costs contestants who figure it out too late.

This guide covers everything you need to know before your first round begins.

Who Runs Baby of the Year

Baby of the Year is run by Colossal Management LLC, a Delaware-registered for-profit professional fundraising company. The 2026 competition is presented by Jessica Alba, actress and entrepreneur, who is associated with Baby2Baby the designated charity for this competition.

Good Housekeeping, which appeared in earlier Baby of the Year prize marketing, is not an editorial endorser of the competition. As 6ABC Philadelphia's Action News Troubleshooters reported in their 2024 investigation, Good Housekeeping's involvement was a paid advertising placement not editorial endorsement.

The 2026 prize includes a $25,000 cash honorarium and a professional photo shoot for a national advertising campaign promoted via print and digital publications, billboards, and social media channels. The 2025 Baby of the Year winner, Sloane Maya, appeared on Good Morning America and was featured in multiple advertising campaigns following her win.

Who Can Enter

Baby of the Year is open to babies under 24 months old at the time of entry. The entrant must be the baby's parent or legal guardian and must be at least 18 years old. Both parents or guardians and their baby must be permanent legal residents of the United States or Canada excluding Quebec.

Entry is free. No purchase or payment of any kind is necessary to enter.

The entry deadline for the 2026 competition is September 9th, 2026. Entries submitted after that date will not be considered.

What the Charity Does

Every dollar donated through the Baby of the Year platform goes to DTCare, a registered 501c3 public charity, which grants the funds to Baby2Baby after deducting competition fees of 36.5 percent and variable costs.

Baby2Baby is a national nonprofit that provides children living in poverty with diapers, clothing, and basic necessities. Baby2Baby has earned a four-star rating on Charity Navigator with an accountability and finance score of 94. In the last 15 years, Baby2Baby has distributed over half a billion essential items to children in need across all 50 states.

The 2024 Baby of the Year competition resulted in a $24 million grant to Baby2Baby through DTCare according to official Colossal press releases.

The 2026 Round Schedule

Top 20 — August 31 through September 10

Public voting begins. All accepted competitors are placed in groups. Votes accumulate and carry forward through subsequent group rounds. This is the longest individual round of the competition at ten days.

Top 15 — September 10 through September 17

Each group reduces to 15 competitors.

Top 10 — September 17 through September 24

Each group reduces to 10 competitors. By Top 10 the campaign requires consistent daily engagement from your core supporter base.

Top 5 — September 24 through October 1

Each group reduces to 5 competitors. Every remaining baby has strong support behind them.

Group Finals — October 1 through October 8

One baby from each group advances to Quarterfinals. This is the most important round of the group stage.

Wildcard Round — October 9 through October 11

Second-place Group Finals finishers get one final opportunity. Votes reset to zero. 72 hours. This is one of the highest-pressure rounds in the entire competition.

Quarterfinals — October 12 through October 22

Votes reset. New groups. The competition is now exclusively between babies who won their way here.

Semifinals — October 23 through October 29

Votes reset. One baby from each group advances to Finals.

Finals — October 30 through November 5

Votes reset. The final round determines the 2026 Baby of the Year. The winner is announced on or before December 5th, 2026.

What Your Ranking Actually Means

Your baby's profile will show their ranking within their specific group. That group contains a small number of other competitors. Your ranking is accurate within your group. It does not reflect your position in the entire competition.

This is the most misunderstood aspect of the contest and the reason why every parent on social media appears to be doing well simultaneously. Every group has a first place. Hundreds of groups run simultaneously. Understanding this before you enter will save you significant confusion and anxiety during the competition.

The One Rule That Catches Parents Off Guard

The parent or guardian who entered the baby cannot donate or cast votes by donation for their own child. This is explicitly stated in the Baby of the Year official rules. The parent can vote for free once per day like any other supporter. But they cannot use their own funds to purchase donation votes for their own child.

Grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, neighbors, and coworkers can all donate freely. Only the entering parent is restricted.

Violating this rule can result in disqualification. Understanding it before the competition begins protects your entire campaign.

The Thursday Cutoff — What Every Parent Must Know

Every round ends on Thursday at 7PM Pacific time, which is 10PM Eastern, 9PM Central, and 8PM Mountain. This is the most important logistical fact in your entire campaign. Everything in your strategy should be built backward from this deadline every week.

The server congestion in the final 30 minutes before the 7PM Pacific cutoff is real and documented by contestants across multiple competition cycles. Free votes submitted in the last 30 minutes have a higher rate of technical delay than votes submitted earlier. Donation votes have an even tighter processing window.

Build a buffer into your Thursday strategy. Your final push should happen well before 7PM Pacific, not in the final minutes.

What Separates Baby of the Year Parents Who Advance From Those Who Do Not

The parents who reach Quarterfinals and beyond consistently do three things that parents who are eliminated in Group Finals do not.

They manage their supporter network strategically rather than burning through it all at once in the first week. They understand the difference between free vote campaigns in early rounds and donor activation campaigns in late rounds. And they understand the Thursday cutoff deeply enough to build specific timing into every week of their campaign.

If you want to understand all three of these before voting begins on August 31st, the free strategy training at Voting Academy was built specifically for Baby of the Year competitors. It is the training I wish I had before Julian's first round.
