How Baby of the Year Voting Works — Everything Parents Need to Know

Baby of the Year 2026 voting opens in seven days on August 31st. If your baby is registered and competing you need to understand exactly how the voting system works before your first round begins. Not after. Before.

I reached the semifinals of Baby of the Year in 2025 with my son, Julian. Our campaign was covered by Boston 25 News. I am writing this the week before voting opens because the parents who understand the mechanics before round one have a structural advantage over every parent who figures it out as they go.

The Two Ways to Vote

Free daily votes

Every supporter can cast one free vote, every 24 hours. Supporters verify their eligibility typically through Facebook login and then cast their vote for your baby. No cost. The 24-hour clock resets daily.

The timing of that daily reset matters and most parents never think about it. Your supporters should cast their free vote as early in the day as possible to maximize the number of votes they can cast before each Thursday cutoff. A supporter who votes at 9PM on Wednesday has their clock reset at 9PM on Thursday, giving them a free vote they may never cast before the 7PM Pacific cutoff on Thursday.

Donation votes

Every dollar donated through the Baby of the Year platform casts one additional vote, while simultaneously making a tax-deductible charitable contribution to Baby2Baby through DTCare. A supporter who donates $25 casts 25 votes and receives a tax-deductible receipt for a $25 charitable contribution.

The Baby of the Year official rules confirm that donations go directly to DTCare which then grants the funds to Baby2Baby after deducting competition fees.

The self-funding rule

The parent who entered the baby cannot donate or cast votes by donation for their own child. They can and are allowed to cast a free daily vote. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other supporters can donate freely. Only the entering parent is restricted. This rule is clearly stated in the official rules and violating it can result in disqualification.

How the Groups Work

When your baby enters Baby of the Year, they are placed in a group with other competing babies. Your group contains a small number of competitors. Your profile shows your ranking within your specific group, not your position in the entire competition.

This is the single most misunderstood feature of Baby of the Year and it explains why every parent on Facebook appears to be in 1st place or the Top 5 simultaneously. Every group has a 1st place. Tens of Thousands if not hundreds of thousands of groups run simultaneously, just like a tournament bracket. When you see your baby ranked 1st, you are genuinely in 1st place in your group. That ranking does not reflect where you stand against every other baby in the entire competition.

Understanding this changes how you interpret your dashboard and how you communicate your standing to your supporters.

How Rounds Progress

Group rounds — Top 20 through Group Finals

During the group rounds, from Top 20 through Group Finals, votes accumulate and carry forward from one round to the next. A vote cast in Top 20 still counts when Top 15 begins. This is important because it means early momentum compounds. Strong early performance is worth more than it appears because every vote earned in week one is still in your total when week four arrives.

At the end of each group round, the lowest-ranked babies in each group are eliminated. The group reduces from Top 20 to Top 15 to Top 10 to Top 5 to Group Finals. At Group Finals one baby from each group advances to Quarterfinals.

Vote resets — Wildcard and beyond

Starting at the Wildcard Round, votes reset to zero for all advancing competitors. Every baby starts the Wildcard at zero regardless of how many votes they accumulated during the group stage. This reset happens again at every subsequent round — Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals all start fresh.

This reset fundamentally changes the competitive dynamic. A baby who built an enormous lead through accumulated free votes in the group stage has no advantage at Wildcard. The competition restarts completely. This is why the strategy that works in Top 20 cannot simply be repeated in the late rounds.

The 2X Voting Window

At certain points during the competition, Colossal may offer a 2-for-1 voting promotion where each free vote counts as two. These promotions are offered at Colossal's sole discretion, as stated in the official rules, and are typically announced through the contest platform.

Most parents either miss these windows entirely or learn about them after they close. The 2X window is not explicitly scheduled in advance, but historically appears during either low engagement or high-intensity round transitions. Being aware that these windows exist and watching for them is a meaningful advantage over the majority of contestants who never know to look.

The Thursday 7PM Pacific Cutoff — The Most Important Time of Every Week

Every Baby of the Year round ends on Thursday at 7PM Pacific time. Here is the conversion for every time zone.

7PM Pacific equals 10PM Eastern.
7PM Pacific equals 9PM Central.
7PM Pacific equals 8PM Mountain.

This is the single most important logistical fact in your entire campaign. Everything you communicate to your supporters should be oriented around this deadline.

Why the final 30 minutes are dangerous

In the final 30 minutes, before the 7PM Pacific cutoff, the Baby of the Year website experiences server congestion. Many parents across thousands to hundreds of thousands of groups all send final vote reminders simultaneously. Their supporters all try to vote at the same time. Free votes submitted in the last 30 minutes have a higher documented rate of technical delay than votes submitted earlier in the evening.

Build a 30-minute buffer into your Thursday strategy. Your communications should drive supporters to vote before 6:30PM Pacific, not in the final minutes. This timing buffer is one of the most actionable things any Baby of the Year parent can implement before their first round begins.

Donation vote timing

Donation votes have an even tighter processing window than free votes. If your supporters plan to donate on Thursday, they should do so no later than 6:55PM Pacific to ensure processing before the cutoff.

The decisions you make about how to communicate with your supporters, when to make donation asks, how to manage supporter fatigue across a eight-week competition, and how to adjust your approach as the rounds change are what determine whether you advance.
