Is Face of Halloween a Scam? What Contestants and Voters Need to Know
Face of Halloween opens for public voting on August 25th, 2026. Every time it opens the same question appears. Is this real? Where does the money go? Is the celebrity involvement genuine? Is the contest worth entering?
I competed in a Colossal contest with my son and reached the semifinals. The structure of Face of Halloween is identical to every other Colossal competition. Here is the complete factual answer.
Who Runs Face of Halloween
Face of Halloween is operated by Colossal Management LLC, a Delaware-registered for-profit professional fundraising company. The celebrity hosts including Jamie Lee Curtis, Matthew Lillard, and Kane Hodder are brand ambassadors in a sponsorship arrangement. Colossal Management runs the competition entirely.
The Charity
Face of Halloween benefits Starlight Children's Foundation through DTCare, Colossal's registered 501c3 charitable intermediary. Starlight Children's Foundation provides programs and services to seriously ill children and their families including hospital entertainment programs and family-centered initiatives at children's hospitals across the United States.
Starlight Children's Foundation is independently verifiable with documented charitable activity spanning decades. Every dollar donated through the Face of Halloween platform goes to DTCare first, which distributes a grant to Starlight after deducting competition fees of 36.5% and variable costs. Donors receive a tax-deductible receipt.
The Prize
The grand prize for Face of Halloween includes a cash award of $13,000, a feature in Rue Morgue Magazine, and a meet-and-greet experience with the celebrity hosts. Verify the specific current cycle prize details at the official contest website as prize packages can vary between cycles.
The 2021 Lawsuit
There was a real lawsuit connected to a Colossal competition. In June 2021, a class action was filed against Crow Vote LLC, an entity associated with the Favorite Chef competition, arguing the paid vote structure constituted an illegal lottery. The court found no unlawful gambling and dismissed the case. That is the only documented legal challenge to Colossal's competition structure and it was resolved in Colossal's favor.
The Facebook Vote Groups
Within hours of entering Face of Halloween, contestants receive solicitations from Facebook groups and accounts offering to boost their votes or sell vote packages. These groups have nothing to do with Colossal Management or the official Face of Halloween competition. They are independent operations exploiting contestant anxiety. Using their services almost certainly violates the official contest rules and risks disqualification.
The Honest Verdict
Face of Halloween is not a scam. It is a legitimate fundraising competition benefiting a verified children's charity. The fee structure is disclosed. The rules are publicly available. The celebrity involvement is a sponsorship arrangement not an editorial endorsement which is standard across all Colossal competitions.
The legitimate criticisms are the same ones that apply to every Colossal contest. The fee structure reduces what reaches the charity. The group ranking creates universal top-performer appearance. These are worth knowing before you enter.
